PAC Remember “Belede‘ Sis’Beli’(12 September 1958 – 21 April 1992): Journalist, Educator, Social Activist and Mother ).Belede Camagwini Nomnyamezeli Mazwai was the sixth of seven children born to Madluba and Phylis Vabaza, both late. She was born in Johannesburg and received her primary school education in the Transkei.
She then went to Inanda Seminary in Natal for her junior certificate and matriculated at Cowan High in Port Elizabeth, returning to Johannesburg and working for The Voice newspaper. Then she joined the Post newspaper and later moved on to the Standard Bank, again returning to journalism in 1982 and worked for Soweto News.
When the newspaper was closed down in 1985 she enrolled at the Soweto College of Education and graduated as a teacher in 1988, attaining six (6) distinctions. In 1989 she taught at Immaculata High School in Soweto.
Mrs Mazwai then enrolled at the University of the Witwatersrand in 1990 for a Bachelor of Arts degree. She was due to complete her degree at the time of her passing, majoring in English and Political Science. Her third major was Comparative Literature.
Also she served on the St Paul’s Anglican Church Council, the Red Cross Society of the Southern Transvaal, the Board of the YWCA and the Mpho and Mphonyane Trust Fund.
She was a member of the PAC and the African Women’s Organisation (AWO), a woman component structure now called PAWO.
She was married to Dr Thami Mazwai. Her spirit lives on through her family; the beloved Mazwai Girls Thandiswa, Nontsikelelo and Nomsa; and the last gift she left us with, Osagyefo Mikateko. Belede Mazwai was a true daughter of the soil who lived her life in service of the African people”.
